Hand in details

The dissertation must be submitted by 4pm Thursday 29th March 2012

DO NOT underestimate the time taken to bind a dissertation – binding bookings will be from two weeks prior to hand in.

The dissertation will normally take the form of a word-processed document of approximately 10,000 words (see the Dissertation Policy and Guidance document)

Students hand in 3 copies bound; one copy for the supervisor, one for the 2nd marker  and one for the external examiner (second marker copy is not written on and is returned to student)

Students will have three formative uploads to the JISC Plagiarism Detection System through the MOODLE page before a mandatory summative upload BEFORE the paper copy is submitted. This should be a PDF document containing the whole dissertation including title page (graphics may have to be deleted if document too large)

Procedure for students and supervisors

The student will agree a project with a supervisor and both will fill in an Undergraduate Dissertation Approval Form. The student will keep a copy of this form that must be in the appendix of the thesis. The supervisor will keep the signed copy.

THE DEADLINE FOR THE DISSERTATION APPROVAL FORM IS 11TH NOVEMBER 2011. STUDENTS NOT MEETING THIS DEADLINE MAY BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE DISSERTATION MODULE

Any student carrying out a project involving research or data gathering must fill in a Form EC1. In addition, projects involving human subjects require Form EC2 and projects carrying out any experimental work on live animals require Form AW1

Supervisors should ensure that all live animal projects submit AW1 to the Animal Welfare Committee and any potentially controversial projects have EC1/EC2 (where applicable) to the Head of Higher Education as Head of the Ethics Committee

If laboratory work/greenhouse use, etc. is required the supervisor should make contact with the Senior Technician or other appropriate staff member well in advance AND ensure the Health and Safety of the student

Resource implications must be discussed with the appropriate Head of School

Supervision and marking

Guidelines for student supervision are described in the Dissertation Policy and Guidance document, but supervisors are allocated a maximum of 6 hours per student (15 mins per week)

This time includes preparation, draft reading, email as well as face-to-face contact

Supervisors are strongly advised to maintain signed tutorial record sheets

DRAFTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 16TH MARCH 2012 WITHOUT SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT

Marking criteria are stated in the Dissertation Policy and Guidance document and the relevant marking forms are accessible from the CASTLe website (Dissertation Final Marks Form)

The two markers should agree a mark and provide a short statement of overall feedback

If a mark cannot be agreed then the dissertation should be marked by a third member of staff

If a mark can still not be agreed between the three markers then the thesis should be referred to the Head of Higher Education (n.b. External Examiners should not be involved in this procedure)

External examiners will survey an appropriate range of theses to ascertain that marking is being carried out correctly, but are not allowed to alter the marks of individual students.
